Eureka!
As part of our STEAM Week, we donned our Lavoisier alter egos. Here are some of the scientific experiments we carried out.
The Coke and Mentos Experiment
Have you ever heard of the famed Coke and Mentos Eruption? We carried out this experiment and here's
what we observed:
The Mentos candies provide a rough surface that causes the carbon dioxide and water bonds to break resulting in carbon dioxide bubbles. Because the candies are dense, they sink rapidly through the liquid, causing a quick, large eruption.
The Elephant Toothpaste 🐘
This experiment is named The Elephant Toothpaste because the chemical reaction produces a large foamy mess that looks like toothpaste squirting out of a tube. It is so big that only an elephant could use toothpaste this big.
We created this foamy substance by decomposing hydrogen peroxide using yeast and water as a catalyst. Of course, there was a reaction!
